How Tax Software Can Make Taxes a Breeze
π 2026 Update: What Changed for Tax Software Users
This section was added in October 2026. It covers the federal changes that matter most if you file with tax software. The original article follows below, unchanged.
π The new Schedule 1-A deductions
The One, Big, Beautiful Bill (signed July 2025) created four new deductions. The IRS put all four on a new form called Schedule 1-A. You attach it to your Form 1040.
These deductions apply for tax years 2025 through 2028. You can claim them whether you itemize or take the standard deduction.
- π΅ Tips. Up to $25,000 of qualified tip income. Phases out above $150,000 MAGI ($300,000 joint).
- β±οΈ Overtime. Up to $12,500 ($25,000 joint) of the premium portion of overtime pay. Phases out above $150,000 MAGI ($300,000 joint).
- π Car loan interest. Up to $10,000 of interest on a loan for a new qualified vehicle. Phases out above $100,000 MAGI ($200,000 joint).
- π΅ Seniors 65 and older. An extra $6,000 per person ($12,000 if both spouses qualify). Phases out above $75,000 MAGI ($150,000 joint).
Two rules apply to all four. You need a Social Security number on the return. If you are married, you must file jointly.
Good tax software will ask about these items in its interview. If your software never asks about tips, overtime, or car loan interest, that is a warning sign that it was not updated.
π Standard deduction amounts
The standard deduction went up under the new law. For 2025 returns filed in 2026:
- Single or married filing separately: $15,750
- Married filing jointly: $31,500
- Head of household: $23,625
For 2026 returns filed in 2027, the amounts rise again to $16,100, $32,200, and $24,150. The top rate stays at 37 percent. For 2026 it applies above $640,600 for single filers and $768,700 for joint filers.
π« IRS Direct File is gone
IRS Direct File was the government's own free filing tool. It is not available for the 2026 filing season. The IRS has set no date to bring it back.
That leaves two free government-backed paths. IRS Free File guided software is free for people with 2025 adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less. Free File Fillable Forms is open at any income, but it does no hand-holding and does not prepare a state return.
You must start at IRS.gov/freefile to get the free version. If you go to a partner's site directly, you may be charged.
ποΈ Key dates
- Federal returns are due April 15.
- An extension moves the filing deadline to October 15. It does not move the payment deadline.
- IRS Free File stays open through October 15 for extension filers.
π‘ Practical Tips for Filing with Software in 2026
These tips are general information, not legal or tax advice. Your situation may differ. A licensed tax professional can review your specific facts.
π Before you start
Gather every W-2, 1099, and 1098 before you open the software. Missing one form is the most common reason people amend a return later.
Write down last year's adjusted gross income. The IRS uses it to verify your identity when you e-file. You can find it on line 11 of last year's Form 1040.
If you had tips or overtime in 2025, check your W-2 closely. Employers got penalty relief for 2025 reporting, so the new boxes may be blank. Your software may ask you to enter those amounts by hand.
β¨οΈ While you work
Read the price screen before you enter data. Most "free" tiers only cover simple returns. Adding a 1099, an HSA, or stock sales often triggers an upgrade. Knowing the trigger points up front avoids surprises at checkout.
Use the import tools, then check them. Importing a 1099-B from a broker saves time, but some user reviews in 2026 reported duplicated or mis-parsed fields. Compare the imported totals to the paper form.
Answer the Schedule 1-A questions carefully. The senior deduction, tip deduction, and car loan interest deduction are new. Software may bury them in a general "other deductions" screen.
β Before you hit submit
Run the built-in error check twice. Once before you pay, once after. Fixing a rejected return is free, but it costs time during the April rush.
Save a PDF of the full return, including worksheets, to your own device. Some filers reported trouble printing returns later from inside the software.
If you owe money and cannot pay in full, file anyway. The failure-to-file penalty is much larger than the failure-to-pay penalty. Then set up an IRS payment plan.
π Tax Software Ranked by Verified User Reviews (2026)
The list below ranks consumer tax software by public user reviews. The main source is Trustpilot. Scores and review counts were checked in October 2026 and will change over time.
This is not a recommendation. Trustpilot scores skew toward people who had a bad day. A low score on a huge brand does not mean it will fail you. A high score on a tiny sample does not prove much either. Read the notes under each entry.
π₯ 1. TaxSlayer
TaxSlayer has been rated 4.2 out of 5 on Trustpilot across roughly 31,000 reviews. That is one of the largest review bases of any product on this list.
Reviewers often point to easy prior-year import and a simple interview flow. It is known for a lower-priced self-employed tier that includes access to a tax pro. Common complaints are state filing fees and pricing that appears late in the process.
π₯ 2. 1040.com
1040.com has been rated 4.5 out of 5 on Trustpilot across roughly 36,000 reviews. It is less well known than the big brands, which is why it sits second despite a higher score.
It has been noted for one flat price of $34.99 that covers federal and state, with no tiers. It does not offer in-person help or a business-entity product.
π₯ 3. TaxAct
TaxAct has been rated 4.0 out of 5 on Trustpilot across roughly 2,400 reviews on its main profile. Reviewers praise the step-by-step guidance for standard returns.
It is one of the few online products that also files S-corporation and partnership returns. Complaints center on fees that show up at the end and on navigation for self-employed filers.
4. FreeTaxUSA
FreeTaxUSA has been rated 2.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot, but on a small sample of about 170 reviews. Expert reviewers rate it much higher. PCMag has given it an Editors' Choice for free federal filing, and it holds about 4.4 out of 5 on G2.
It is known for free federal filing at every level of complexity, with a flat fee for each state return. Complaints focus on add-on charges and support that answers software questions, not tax questions.
5. H&R Block
H&R Block has been rated 1.3 out of 5 on Trustpilot across roughly 1,400 reviews. That score is low. Its strength is different from the others on this list.
It is the only product here with a nationwide network of physical offices. If you want to start online and hand the return to a person, it has been the most common path. It also imports TurboTax files, which matters if you are switching.
6. TurboTax (Intuit)
TurboTax is the market leader by volume. On Trustpilot it has been rated 1.2 out of 5 across roughly 1,100 to 1,300 reviews. On the Apple and Google app stores it has been rated around 4.8. That gap is the widest of any product here.
It is known for the most polished interview and the widest import coverage from banks and brokers. The low consumer score is tied almost entirely to pricing complaints: forced upgrades, state fees shown at checkout, and the cost of its live expert tiers.
π Free option: IRS Free File
If your 2025 adjusted gross income was $89,000 or less, IRS Free File guided software is free. Several of the companies above take part. You must enter through IRS.gov/freefile. The program stays open through October 15 for extension filers.
π How to read this list
Pick by your situation, not by the number alone. A W-2 filer with one state has very different needs from a freelancer with three 1099s and a home office.
Weigh review volume. A 4.2 from 31,000 people tells you more than a 2.8 from 170 people.
Check the current price screen yourself. Every product on this list has been criticized for fees that appear late. That is the single most common complaint across all six.
β Frequently Asked Questions
Does tax software handle the new tip and overtime deductions?
Major products were updated for the 2026 filing season to include Schedule 1-A. Check that the interview asks about tips, overtime, car loan interest, and the senior deduction. If it does not, your version may be out of date.
Is IRS Direct File still available?
No. Direct File was not offered for the 2026 filing season and has no return date. IRS Free File and Free File Fillable Forms are still open.
What is the income limit for IRS Free File?
For returns filed in 2026, guided Free File software is free if your 2025 adjusted gross income was $89,000 or less. Each partner may add its own rules on age or state.
Why do expert reviews and user reviews disagree so much?
Expert reviews test features. User reviews on sites like Trustpilot record frustration, often about price. Both are useful. Read both before you choose.
Can I switch software and keep my history?
Usually yes. Most products import a PDF of last year's return. H&R Block also imports TurboTax's native file format.

4. Convenient: Tax software eliminates the need for users to physically go to a tax preparer's office or mail in their tax returns. Users can file their taxes from the comfort of their own homes, at their own pace, and on their own schedule.
5. Cost-effective: While some tax software requires payment, the fees are generally much lower than hiring a tax preparer. This makes it an affordable option for users who want to save money on their taxes.
How to Choose Tax Software
Choosing the right tax software can make a big difference in the ease and accuracy of filing tax returns. Here are some factors to consider when choosing the right tax software:
1. Compatibility: The tax software should be compatible with the user's operating system and well-suited for the type of tax returns that need to be filed.

What is Tax Software?
Tax Software is a category of software that aids an individual or corporate taxpayer in the filing of their particular tax returns. As oppose to researching the ever-changing tax laws and using cumbersome files to process your tax returns, tax program or tax software can expedite the taxation process.
Tax Software can assist an individual in their tax preparation; forms of tax software will analyze your deductions, credits and incomes to help calculate your taxes to lessen your tax liability. Tax software will file simple and complex tax returns using all necessary IRS e-file forms.
Tax software will typically incorporate a Tax Preparation Service Calculator. This tool is accessed through online tax software and will aid a taxpayer by providing an estimation of any or all applicable withholdings, taxes, and refunds with regards to the initial Tax Preparation Service undertaken by an entity, company, or an individual. Tax Preparation calculators are delivered and made available to all taxpayers in order to allow taxpayers to input their pertinent financial information in the available fields.
When the information is computed, a tax estimate is rendered and made available to the taxpayer. That being said, a tax preparation calculator may not factor exceptions and specifics that exist within specific tax circumstances, refund policies and withholdings.
Tax software is a valuable resource for those filing taxes because the programs, in essence, evaluate the underling tax return and compute the complexities within the return. The mechanisms and technology within the software strip the individual from processing the information themselves. Additionally, tax software will incorporate the various tax laws and tax compliance issues within the program them to ensure that the taxpayer meets the qualifications and regulations established by tax law.
Individuals who file their own taxes, without the help of tax software, will often make mistakes either through miscalculations or based on a failure to meet tax compliance issues. As a result of the margin for error latent within a tax return, these forms of software are made available to help streamline a tax return.
There is a wide and competitive market for tax software. Currently there are numerous programs and companies that offer tax software to individuals and businesses required to pay taxes. The most renowned issuers of tax software are H&R Block and TurboTax.
Turbo Tax is computer software that facilitates the tax preparationof their respective users; Turbo Tax operates with regard to a multitude of functions, ranging from the preparation of income tax withholding reports to calculations of individual tax returns.
